Earth Temple: A Sanctuary for Ecological Grief & Love (2023) at SMUSH Gallery in Jersey City, NJ. Created in collaboration with Nocturnal Medicine.
"Earth Temple: A Sanctuary for Ecological Grief & Love was an immersive installation, a non-denominational house for ecological emotion & spirituality for the Jersey City community. Understanding that today’s layered environmental crises evoke a complexity of emotion in many of us—including fear, anger, grief, powerlessness—Earth Temple offered a place for these emotions to exist, to be approached with respect & care, & to become channels towards deeper accountability & connection to our environment & one another." - Nocturnal Medicine
Our goal was to create a space that could facilitate and hold these emotions. To do this, we created an enclosed space full of objects to interact with, and visual gestures to alter our state of being. Above a pool, we saw the moving reflection of water; bringing a sense of hypnotic motion into a sacred space.
The moving reflection was created using a pinspot, a disco ball motor, a skinny piece of wood, mylar and other reflective material, black wrap, and lots of tie line.
